The record
Why it matters
A small house-shaped reliquary from the church of Saint-Martial at Champagnat, in the diocese of Limoges. On the front Christ blesses between Mary Magdalene and Saint Martial, the first bishop of Limoges, while the roof plaque shows the hand of God between censing angels and the reverse carries the symbols of the four Evangelists. Made around 1150, it is an early example of the champlevé enamel for which Limoges workshops became known across Europe.
