The record
Why it matters
This small alabaster figure once walked, with dozens of others, in the carved funeral procession around the tomb of Philip the Bold at the Charterhouse of Champmol near Dijon. The tomb was commissioned in 1381 and finished in 1410, six years after the duke’s death, with Claus de Werve completing the work begun by his uncle Claus Sluter. The mourner’s grief is carried almost entirely by cloth: the hood and folds hide the face and concentrate attention on posture.
