Why it matters

Saint Andrew holds his book and cross against a tooled gold ground, within a rectangular frame that is original to the panel. It comes from a five-part portable altarpiece that may have been commissioned by the government of Siena. The refinement of the saint’s expression and the way his fingers hold the book show why Simone was admired by contemporaries, among them the poet Petrarch.
