The record
Why it matters
In this small devotional panel the Christ Child pushes aside his mother’s veil while she looks past him with a sorrowful expression. A painted parapet links the sacred space of the picture to that of the viewer, and the lower edge of the original frame is marked by candle burns from generations of use. The gold ground, tooled at the haloes, would have caught the light of those candles.
